How to Plan Your First AI-Assisted Short Video

November 3, 2026 · Digi Codexis Institute

AI tools make it possible to create a short video without a camera crew, but good videos still start with good planning. Here is a simple workflow you can follow for your first AI-assisted short video for Reels, Shorts or a product promotion.

1. Pick one clear idea

A short video should communicate one message. Choose a single tip, story, product benefit or question. If you cannot describe the idea in one sentence, simplify it.

2. Write a strong hook

The first two seconds decide whether people keep watching. Open with a question, a surprising fact or a clear promise of what the viewer will learn.

3. Script it

Write a script of around 80 to 120 words for a 30 to 45 second video. Use short sentences. You can use an AI writing assistant to draft ideas, but edit the result so it sounds natural and accurate.

4. Storyboard the scenes

Split the script into 6 to 8 scenes. For each scene, write what is shown on screen, any on-screen text and roughly how long it lasts.

5. Create the visuals

Generate images or clips for each scene with AI image and video tools. Keep a consistent style by reusing the same descriptive words in each prompt (colours, lighting, style, character description).

6. Add a voiceover and captions

Record your own voice or use an AI voice tool. Add accurate captions, since many people watch without sound. Check spelling and timing carefully.

7. Edit, export and publish

Combine scenes, voiceover, captions and light background music in a video editor. Export in vertical 9:16 format for Reels and Shorts. Write a clear title and description, and publish consistently.

Use AI responsibly

This workflow is the foundation of our 15-day AI Video Creation course, where each day includes a practical task that builds toward a final video project.
