For years, “getting found online” meant one thing: ranking on Google’s search results page. That is still important, but people now also get answers from featured snippets, voice assistants and AI-powered search experiences. This is why marketers now talk about three related ideas: SEO, AEO and GEO.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of improving a website so it appears for relevant searches. It includes keyword research, on-page optimization (titles, headings, content quality), technical SEO (site speed, mobile-friendliness, indexing) and off-page signals such as quality links and mentions.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) focuses on making your content the best direct answer to a question. Search engines and assistants often show a short answer before any links. To be chosen, content should answer questions clearly and early, use descriptive headings, and include well-structured FAQ sections.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is about visibility in AI-generated answers. AI search tools summarise information from many sources. Content that is accurate, clearly organised, covers a topic in depth and is associated with a recognisable brand or expert is more likely to be understood and referenced.
How the three work together
- Start with SEO fundamentals. A fast, crawlable, mobile-friendly website with helpful content is the base for everything else.
- Answer real questions. Use search intent research to find the questions your audience asks, and answer them directly.
- Structure your content. Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists, tables and FAQ sections help both people and machines.
- Build topical authority. Cover a subject through a cluster of related articles that link to each other.
- Be accurate and specific. Clear entities (people, places, products, concepts) and trustworthy information matter more than keyword repetition.
A simple checklist for your next article
- Choose one main question and its search intent.
- Answer it in the first two or three sentences.
- Use H2 and H3 headings that match related questions.
- Add examples, steps or a short table where helpful.
- Finish with a short FAQ section.
- Link to related articles on your site.
SEO, AEO and GEO are not separate tricks. They are different views of the same goal: publishing genuinely helpful, well-structured content that answers what people are looking for. These topics are covered in Modules 2 and 3 of our Full Stack Digital Marketing course.
